Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Standard for Azure is a desktops-as-a-service virtualization solution that enables any business to deliver virtual apps and desktops to any device securely from Microsoft Azure with ease. The core Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop components include: Studio – Studio is the management console that enables you to configure and manage your deployment, eliminating the need for separate management consoles for managing delivery of applications and desktops. Studio provides various wizards to guide you through the process of setting. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Standard for Azure is a desktops-as-a-service virtualization solution that enables any business to deliver virtual apps and desktops to any device securely from Microsoft Azure with ease. This simple, turnkey solution gives IT the flexibility to simplify the management and deployment of both Windows and Linux. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop is a solution for virtualization, which provides access to desktops from all devices while providing IT control and visibility over virtual machines (VMs), applications, security, and licenses.You can leverage Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops to: Run applications and desktops separately from the operating system. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops control plane is built on Microsoft Azure, providing IT a single management interface that enables you to manage all your environments from one cloud-based location. Strategic Focus: Enabling Infrastructure Services

Description of the Service

Virtual App is a service which delivers secure access on and off campus to UCC’s online applications and services where the following conditions exist:

  • If a staff member cannot run the required version of browser or plugins on their device for applications such as DMIS, ITS, HRIS (e.g. Java Runtime Environment).
  • If a staff member wants to access services from off campus.
  • If a staff member has difficulty accessing services from a non-windows device (e.g. Apple Macs).
  • If a student wants access to the Office suite, SPSS, EndNote, R Studio or other applications remotely or on a non-Windows based device.
  • If a student wants to print from their own device to the SIT printing service.

In the above cases, UCC staff and students can simply access Virtual App using the web browser on any device by going to https://virtualapp.ucc.ie and authenticating with their UCC email address and password.

How to start Citrix VirtualApp

On a Windows Desktop or Laptop open a web browser (IE and Chrome work best) and go to the webpage https://virtualapp.ucc.ie

If you are prompted for your credentials please use your UCC email address and password. The Citrix Workspace App is installed on managed computers on campus and you should see the screen below. Click on the 'Staff Desktop' to start your Citrix session.

If you do not see this please follow the installation instructions below.

Windows installation instructions

If this is the first time you are accessing the service you may be prompted to install the Citrix Workspace App.

Check on 'I agree' and press the install button.

This will start the download of the Citrix Workspace App, Once this is downloaded run the application (at the bottom of the webpage).

This will begin the install of the Citrix Application - Click on 'Start'

Check the box to agree to the licence agreement and press the 'Install' button

Important - If you are prompted to 'Enable Single Sign-on' ensure that the check box is ticked before pressing the 'Install' button

Click on 'Finish' to end the install. We recommend that you reboot your computer after the install is completed.

MacOS installation instructions

  1. If this is the first time you are accessing the service you may be prompted to install the Citrix Workspace App.
  2. Check on 'I agree' and press the install button.
  3. This will start the download of the Citrix Workspace App, Once this is downloaded run the application.
  4. Double Click on 'Intstall Citrix Workspace'
  5. Click 'Continue' on the next 3 screens
  6. Click 'Agree' to agree to the license terms
  7. Click 'Install'
  8. You may be asked for your MacOS admin password - enter this and click on 'Install Software'
  9. Click 'Close' to end the installation and ee recommend that you reboot your computer after the install is completed.
  10. On reboot login to https://virtualapp.ucc.ie and use your UCC email address and password
  11. Click on 'Staff Desktop' to start your Citrix session
  12. If you are prompted to update the Citrix Workspace App please click 'Confirm' to start the update process

Using Citrix on iPad or iPhone

To use Citrix on your iOS device you must first install the Citrix Workspace App from the App Store. If you are reading this page from your phone the App is available using this link:
Otherwise go to the App Store on your iOS device
  1. In the App Store, search for ‘Citrix Workspace’ and download it.

  2. Open the app directly from the App Store or from your home screen.

  3. Choose either notification option if prompted

  4. Enter the Store URL as https://virtualapp.ucc.ie and press 'Continue'

  5. Use your UCC email address and password to login

You will now be presented with a list of Virtual Apps and Desktops. Please select 'Staff Desktop' to begin your Citrix session.

Using Citrix on an Android Phone or Tablet

To use Citrix on your Android device you must first install the Citrix Workspace App from the Google Play Store. If you are reading this page from your Android phone the App is available using this link:
Otherwise go to the Play Store on your Andoid device
In the Play Store, search for ‘Citrix Workspace’ and press 'Install'
When the application has installed open the app directly from the Play Store or from your home screen.
If you are prompted for the Application to access resources on your phone click 'Allow' and then click on 'Get Started'
Enter the store url as https://virtualapp.ucc.ie and press 'Continue'
Use your UCC email address and password and click on 'Sign on'
You will now be presented with a list of Virtual Apps and Desktops. Please select 'Staff Desktop' to begin your Citrix session.

Using Citrix on a Chromebook

  1. Login to the Chromebook using your UCC email address and password
  2. The Workspace App will install automatically
  3. Click on the Citrix Workspace icon when it appears in your taskbar

OneDrive in Virtual App

When you are using Virtual App it is recommended that you use OneDrive for Business for all you files and folders. All staff members have a OneDrive account already created as part of Office 365. Using OneDrive for Business will ensure that you have access to your files on your own computer and in Virtual App.

Citrix Virtual Desktop And Apps

On login to the Virtual App Desktop, OneDrive is mapped as the X: drive and is visible as a drive in File Explorer

On your own computer you can access OneDrive through the OneDrive for Business client or through the web https://www.ucc.ie/en/staffapps/

Multiple Monitor Support

The Citrix Virtual Desktop supports multiple monitors. If you wish to run an application using more than one monitor you must first expand the Virtual Desktop across your screens. To do this:

1. Drag the Virtual Desk so that it spans the monitors e.g. for two monitors drag the Virtual Desktop window between the two screens (see image below).

2. Maximise the Virtual Desktop window using the the square symbol in the top right corner.

3. The Virtual Desktop now spans both screens and available to the Virtual Desktop applications.

Deploy Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop –Single Server Deployment

Tutorial on how to quickly setup a new Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop 1912 LTSR with the following components in a Windows 2019 Server Standard

  • Delivery Controller
  • Studio
  • Director
  • Citrix License Server
  • StoreFront

Installation of Delivery Controller (DDC)

Delivery Controller is the server-side component that is responsible for managing user access, plus brokering and optimizing connections. Controllers also provide the Machine Creation Services that create desktop and server images.

Download Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop 7 1912 LTSR (Around 2.8GB) via Citrix Portal

Mount the downloaded ISO file and click on AutoSelect. Click Start to install Virtual Apps and Desktops

Click Get Started to install 1st Delivery Controller

Select I have read, understand, and accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next to continue

Click Next

Click Next

A warning message will be prompted if the VM is less than 6GB RAM

Click Next

Click Install

Uncheck Collect Diagnostic Information if you do not want to send information to Citrix Cloud and click Next

Reboot the server once installation is completed successfully

Installation of StoreFront

Citrix StoreFront is an enterprise application store that provides an interface for users to access XenDesktop and XenApp virtual desktops and applications remotely.

Click AutoSelect on the mounted ISO file, and select Citrix StoreFront

Accept the license agreement and click Next

Click Next to deploy IIS Roles automatically

Click Install

Reboot the server manually to finish the installation of StoreFront

Initial Configuration Using Citrix Studio

Studio is the management console where you configure and manage your Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops deployment.

Launch Citrix Studio to setup a Site by clicking on Deliver Applications and Desktop to your users

Select A Fully Configured, Production-ready Site (Recommended for new users) and specify a Site Name to create a new Site

The following 3 x Databases are created in Local SQL Express

  • Site DB – CitrixAENTISSite
  • Monitoring DB – CitrixAVENTISMonitoring
  • Logging DB – CitrixAVENTISLogging

Select Use the free 30-day Trial to install trial license to Citrix Licensing Server

Machine Creation Services (MCS) is used to provision Virtual Machines (VMs) for Hosted Share Applications & Dedicated Windows 10 machines via VMware vCenter.

Accept the Certificate Warning if Self Sign Certificate is used in vCenter

Select Use storage shared by hypervisors to store provisioned VM in Shared Datastore

Click Next to continue

Click Finish to start to provision the new site with the configuration specified

Click Test Site Configuration to verify there is no error found on the new provisioned site

Creating the Machine Catalog for Server OS

A machine catalog is a collection of desktops or physical computers that are managed as a single entity. To deliver applications and desktops to users, the machine administrator creates a catalog of machines and the assignment administrator allocates machines from the machine catalog to users by creating delivery groups.

Citrix virtual apps and desktop cost

Go to Citrix Studio and click on Machine Catalog – Set up machines for desktop and application or remote PC access

Click Next to continue

Select Multi-Session OS and click Next to continue

Select Machines that are power managed (for example, virtual machines or blade PCs) and Citrix Machine Creation Service (MCS). Click Next to continue

Select the Master Image called CITRIX-MASTER-SRV

Enter the number of VMs which will be deployed from Master Image and click Next to continue

Select the Organization Unit (OU) where the new VMs will be stored and enter the naming pattern, CITRIX-APP## in Account Naming Scheme

Enter a Machine Catalog Name & Description and click Finish

A new VM called CITRIX-APP01 will be provisioned in VMware Host

Click on Apps – Notepad and the ICA file will be downloaded instead of opening it in Citrix Workspace for now
